$19.00

Author - Richard F. Newcomb

Year published - 1976

Published by - Indiana University Press

Book Format - Hard Cover

Genre - World War 2 - Pacific

Summary

This is the story of the USS Indianapolis, this ship had just delivered the atomic bomb and was steaming westward to an horrible fate. She was sailing without any escort and was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine. She sank in about 12 minutes, taking 300 men with her. There were about 900 survivors and they spent 4 horrific days and 5 terrifying nights in the water. They had very little food or water, but their greatest danger was the sharks that preyed upon them. Because the Indianapolis had sailed in radio silence, no one knew of their fate. In the end a Navy patrol plane accidentally happened upon them and radioed about their plight. When they were rescued, they could only find 316 survivors still alive. This book is about that ordeal by someone who endured it.
