$10.00

Author - Richard F. Newcomb, Peter Maas

Year published - 2000

Published by - HarperCollins Publishers

Book Format - Hard Cover

Genre - World War 2 - Pacific

Summary

This is the story of the USS Indianapolis, the US Navy cruiser that had just delivered the atomic bomb in order for it to be dropped on Japan. While maintaining radio silence she was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine and she promptly sank in about 12 minutes. This was just the start of this harrowing story. After the ship went down with about 300 crewman , the remaining 900 survivors spent 4 horrific days and 5 nights in shark infested waters. They had very little water and food, under a pitiless sun, and were terrorized by the constant shark attacks. Eventually they were spotted by an American plane and were rescued, at least the 316 survivors that managed to stay alive until rescued. This book is an accurate account of the ordeal suffered by those survivors and the aftermath that followed.
