Summary

This is a meticulously researched and important history of the career of Judge Advocate Joseph Holt, the head of the bureau of Military Justice during the Civil War. It fell to Holt to Prosecute the conspirators charged in the Lincoln assassination, and also to pursue charges against others, such as Jefferson Davis. This book is very readable and we learn a great deal about the events and tragedy of the period. This is also an excellent, objective account of the trial and its place in American History.
